Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana) is an often-overlooked species in the mix of native small trees. Cascara is widely adaptable to a range of site conditions but prefers some sunlight and moist soil for best growth conditions. It has gray bark, glossy oblong leaves, small greenish-white flowers, and dark fruit in late summer that is a good food source for birds and other wildlife.
