Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a small tree/large shrub that provides year-round benefits. By April or May, white, pleasantly fragrant flowers emerge, attracting and supporting pollinators. In fall, the leaves turn shades of yellow, gold, and sometimes red. Its deep purple to black chokecherries are edible, though quite sour, and serve as a beloved, nutrient-rich food source for birds, small mammals, and bears. They also make an excellent choice for jams and wine.
