Red elderberry can be found in shady or open forested areas, along streams, and other moist sites. The bark, buds, and ripened berries are eaten by deer, squirrels, birds, and various other wildlife. The seeds of the berries from this plant are poisonous but the fruit can be eaten raw or cooked.
