Wild Ginger (Asarum caudatum) forms mats of dark –green, heart-shaped leaves. It establishes well under forested tree cover, tolerating more acidic soils under conifers. Keep an eye on the undersides of the leaves in the spring for their sweet, deep purple flowers. Named for the gingery smell of the plant’s roots, Wild Ginger provides food for deer and smaller mammals.
