Also known as a Douglas Hawthorn, the fragrant flowers attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. The dark purple to black colored fruit is edible and are enjoyed by some birds. This plant does well in open spaces, on forest edges, and along streams. Due to the spread of their roots, black hawthorns are able to help prevent erosion and can stabilize soil. The thorny branches of this plant also make this a great addition for creating a thicket or barrier while also acting as habitat for small wildlife.
